My kids' most favorite books are the funny picture books. And while I appreciate many types of picture books, I have to admit, that funny picture books are the most fun to read aloud.
It is so gratifying to read aloud a funny picture book that has everyone listening dissolving in giggles. I will never get tired of hearing my kids belly laugh over a funny picture book!
These 12 Funny Picture Books are the kind of books that inspire a lot of laughter. They're also really fun to read aloud over and over again.
If your kids are getting antsy cooped up in doors this winter, these are the books to check out from the library and read aloud together.
Really Funny Picture Books to Read Aloud
Escargot by Dashka Slater
Escargot is the most adorable little French snail and he wants to be your favorite animal. He knows it's a long shot - who picks a snail to be their favorite animal? - but he's going to spend the whole book trying to convince you. This is especially fun to read aloud with a French accent (no matter how terrible).
7 Ate 9: The Untold Story by Tara Lazar
I love reading this book aloud (and in my best black and white private detective voice). 6 has a problem and he heads to a private detective to help him figure it out (think Maltese Falcon). 6 knows 7 is always after him and now with 9 missing (7 ate 9?!), 6 is getting worried.
A Pig Parade is a Terrible Idea by Michael Ian Black
Haven't you always thought a pig parade would be so fun? Well, you'd be wrong.
Shh! We Have a Plan by Chris Haughton
Four friends are creeping through the woods with a plan to capture a bird. But the best laid plans . . .
Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein
My kids love this one so much that we've read it about 500 times. No joke. Luckily it's really fun to read.
Papa Chicken is trying to read little chicken a bed time story, but little chicken just can't stop interrupting! (We got the newest book, Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise for Christmas and it's just as funny.)
The Good For Nothing Button! by Charise Mericle Harper
Yellow bird has a button that he claims is good for nothing, but Red Bird and Blue Bird press it and insist it does in fact do something, not nothing. It's hilarious!
The Great Sheep Shenanigans by Peter Bently
Lou Pine the wolf is confident he can trick those dumb sheep and sneak away with a tasty lamb snack. But, that's not exactly how it goes. One of my very favorite read alouds.
Are You Scared, Darth Vader? by Adam Rex
Nothing can scare Darth Vader, right? But maybe . . .
And you don't need to be a Star Wars fan to appreciate this one, but knowing how to do a good Darth Vader voice will definitely make this more fun to read.
That is NOT a Good Idea! by Mo Willems
A hungry fox, a plump goose, and a little quartet of chicks who know that combination is not a good idea. This clever book is guaranteed to make you laugh!
The Princess and the Pig by Jonathan Emmett
I never get tired of this book! Priscilla the princess and Pigmella the pig are switched at birth and every page of this story is fantastic.
Count the Monkeys by Mac Barnett
This book says it's about counting monkeys, but where are the monkeys to count? Mac Barnett is always a picture book genius and this is no exception.
Stuck by Oliver Jeffers
Floyd's kite gets stuck in a tree but when he tries to get it out by knocking it down with his shoe, that gets stuck too. The story only gets sticker from there.

Thanks for all of these choices! Are You Scared, Darth Vader? is incredibly hilarious, but it's literally the only one of these we own. That means discovery is in my future. Where should we start?

You really can't go wrong with any of these! They're all big favorites of ours and books we read ALL the time. But if you haven't read The Princess and the Pig, it's a book I never get tired of reading - so clever!
