Raising four children over the past sixteen years has been an incredible, albeit sometimes difficult, experience. One of the things that has been so fascinating as I’ve observed my four kids growing up is just how different they all are – each has such a unique personality.
Something that has been true for all four of my children, especially in the younger years, is how helpful and comforting routines have been. But while all of my kids have thrived with good routines (bedtime, meal time, story time, school days, etc.), some of them have really struggled when any of those routines are unexpectedly changed. My youngest son is especially prone to upset when change occurs, which is why I was so pleased to find Alycat and the Cattywampus Wednesday!
In Alycat, Alysson Foti Bourque shows kids in a playful way how to use positive thinking to make change feel exciting and fun instead of scary and difficult. It’s been so helpful at our house!
About Alycat and the Cattywampus Wednesday
The book opens as Alycat wakes up expecting a normal school day. But when she heads downstairs it’s not her normal breakfast on the table, and even though hers is the first bus stop, the school bus is already full. By the time school starts, Alycat has realized that everything is topsy-turvy and she has no idea what to expect next.
Throughout the story, as Alycat encounters one change after another, her friends, teachers, and parents encourage her to see the changes as fun and exciting even though she feels confused and unsure.
Our Review of Alycat and the Cattywampus Wednesday
Just yesterday we had an unexpected change to our normal routine that bothered my 8 year old. Every Wednesday, because it’s half-day of school here, we have what we call “Wednesday Snack.” It’s nothing fancy, but it is usually something different that we don’t eat on a regular basis and I try to give it a fun presentation.
Yesterday, I was overloaded with work, plus a broken freezer that needed repair, and I didn’t prepare the special Wednesday snack. Rory was upset until I reminded him that it was just a “cattywampus Wednesday” like Alycat had in the book. He was immediately cheered up and was then willing to think of a way to make the change in plans more fun. He ended up making a snack for everyone with ingredients we already had and I loved his creativity with it.
So, obviously, I’m a fan of the book!
I love when children’s books help teach important life skills in a fun and effective way! Thank you Alycat (and Alysson Foti Bourque) for making unexpected change a little easier to handle at our house.
Kids ages 3 to 8 will enjoy the bright pictures and fun characters, as well as the teachable storyline.
