These are Excellent Chapter Book Series for Second Graders, kids ages 7 and 8. Fun book series are the perfect way to get 2nd graders hooked on reading!
Second grade, when kids are 7 and 8 years old, is an important time for reading. At this age kids begin to move beyond easy readers and start to read more independently. This is a crucial time for them as they gain confidence in reading and improve their fluency and comprehension skills.
Every book they read at this age counts and builds their knowledge bank. The key is to help your 2nd graders read as often as possible.
My best trick for getting a kid to read more is to introduce them to a great book series. Once they're hooked, they'll want to keep reading the series!
About these Chapter Book Series for 2nd Graders
These are all fantastic chapter book series for second graders, and with a wide variety of genres to choose from, there's something for everyone.
Note: Reading levels at this age can vary widely. I've seen this even among my own children - my oldest daughter was reading big fat novels at the age of 7, but when my third daughter was in second grade, she wouldn't pick up a book that didn't have pictures in it. This is all very normal!
The book list below lists the chapter book series for second graders roughly from Easiest Chapter Books to Harder Chapter Books.
The first half of the list contains chapter books with full-color illustrations that aren't too text heavy. The books on the lower half of the list have more text and fewer illustrations that are mostly black and white.
