I am so EXCITED to share my 2019 Family Summer Reading Guide with you! Summer break has officially begun here and we’re ready to dive headlong into all the summer reading.
Whether you’re raising a house full of happy readers or you have to coax, prod, and beg your kids to pick up a book outside of school, I’ve put together a Summer Reading Guide for ALL of you! Books for little listeners, middle grade readers, and even your teenagers – the whole family!
What’s in the Family Summer Reading Guide?
- A Read Aloud Book List for kids ages 4 to 7
- Fantastic Middle Grade Books for kids ages 8 to 12
- Teen Reads
- Books for the Whole Family – these are excellent audio books for family road trips this summer!
- All of my best tips for making Summer Reading Great!
- A simple reading chart to keep track of what you read together this summer
It’s an 8 page guide with 20 books that I very thoughtfully picked with everyone in the family in mind. These are books that are age appropriate, well written, fun to read, and all of them were picked because they will be entertaining both to your kids AND to you as you read along with them.
I’ve included short descriptions of each book to help you decide what will work best for your readers. I’ve also included a page with my tips and tricks for making summer reading more enjoyable for everyone.
I also included my favorite compelling reading questions from the inimitable Sarah Mackenzie to help you have better family book club discussions.
With the exception of page 5, which is a full color spread of all the book covers (because kids do like to judge a book by it’s cover!), it’s all black and white and easy to print.
Why is this helpful?
The Family Summer Reading Guide is a helpful way to find great books without having to spend a lot of time searching. There are 5 books in each category (20 books total). My kids and I have read every single one and can say unequivocally that we have a pretty great book list here.
There are a variety of genres, with a mix of both new and older books so you’ll be sure to find something you can read at your library right away.
I created this Family Summer Reading Guide to help families get excited about reading together. This isn’t just a book list to hand off to your children and hope they read something. Instead, I hope this will help you pick books that you can read together.
There are books in the guide that are perfect for reading aloud. If you have older kids and teens that aren’t so keen on being read to anymore, I have suggestions for how to treat summer reading more like a family book club. Let your teen pick a book from the guide, then get two copies so you can read it too and discuss it. This is easier and way more fun than it might sound!
Really, this guide has everything you need to create some fun reading memories with your family this summer! And if you download the guide and you still can’t find the right book for your family, just shoot me an email and I’ll help you find the right book. It’s one of my super powers.
