Yikes! It's been cold this winter. And as I'm writing this, I'm looking out the window at the second snow storm we've experienced just this week!
But while I may not be a big fan of winter and its chilly temperatures, I'm a huge fan of picture books about winter. There are so many good ones!
If you're trying to embrace the season like I am, I also have this fun (and free) Winter Picture Book Bingo Printable. I also have our Big List of Winter Picture Books with so many of our favorite books that we've been collecting over the years.
This list of New Picture Books About Winter is a small collection of delightful children's books that have come out in the past few months. These are the kind of picture books about winter that remind me, especially when I'm grumbling about missing the sunshine, that winter really does have its own special kind of magic.

New Picture Books About Winter
Small Walt Spots Dot
This is Small Walt's third picture book appearance, but this was our first introduction to the charming little snow plow. We fell in love immediately!
It's a simple book with short, rhyming words that tell a sweet story about rescuing a puppy in the snow. The illustrations are fun and colorful and just old fashioned enough to charm my socks off.
My first grader begs me to read this one every day.
Ten Ways to Hear Snow
This book is a delightful sensory experience. The swish-swish sound of people sweeping snow off their cars, the snyak-snyek-snyuk sound of boots on the ground, and even the still and silent sound of snow.
Kenard Pak's illustrations take this beautiful winter tale to the next level. It's a perfect picture book about winter!
If Winter Comes, Tell It I'm Not Here
I think this book may have been written for me! The little boy in this book is convinced that there's nothing better than summer (and I'd agree wholeheartedly!). But while he's missing swimming and sunshine and ice cream, his older sister sets out to help find things to love about winter too.
This is an absolute delight, from start to finish!
The Snow Dancer
When Sofia wakes up to a snow day, she immediately heads to a nearby park where she can enjoy the fresh snow all by herself. But when her silent snow dance in the pristine snow is interrupted by the rest of the neighborhood children, she has to adapt her plan to include the other children.
The illustrations in this one are stunning, and paired with the lyrical text, it's a beautiful read aloud experience.
When Winter Comes: Discovering Wildlife in Our Snowy Woods
This is a wonderful book about what happens in nature when winter comes - what the fish do when the lake freezes over, how the mice find seeds in the snow, and how the birds shield themselves from cold winter winds.
The illustrations are colorful and inviting, making it a big hit at story time.
Snow Friends
A boy and his dog having adventures in the snow! This is sure to be a hit for little listeners. It's a really cute book.
A Sled for Gabo
It's a snow day and all the kids head out to play, but Gabo's new to the neighborhood and he doesn't have a sled, or warm socks, or waterproof boots. Luckily he's able to make some kind new friends who have creative solutions to his snow-problems.
A very sweet story of friendship, kindness, and community.
A Thing Called Snow
I LOVE all of Yuval Zumer's books - they're works of art! In this book, Fox and Hare, unlikely friends, set out together to find a thing called snow. Their journey is an absolute delight!
Snow Falls
This book has few words, and the text is simple enough for early readers to sound out most of the story. The bright colorful pictures are so fun and the entire book is a celebration of snow!
A Polar Bear in the Snow
This is a striking and unique book. With few words and spectacular torn paper white on white illustrations, it's very compelling.
Follow along with polar bear on his quest across a frozen tundra to the bright blue sea - I guarantee you'll be happy you journeyed along with him!
Once Upon a Winter Day
Milo wants his mom to read him a story, but since she's busy working, she suggests he go outside and play in the snow. When he heads outside and sees little mouse footprints in the snow, he realizes the mouse may have a story to tell and he follows the footprints to see what happens next.
This is a wonderful winter story! We have a copy from the library right now, but we like it so much I think it will make it into our permanent collection.
