New Halloween Children's Books for 2022! 15 new picture books and board books to read with your kids this month.
My favorite thing to do in October is take out our Halloween Children's Book collection to read all month long. They also double as Halloween decorations at our house!
Our collection is getting massive and every year I wonder if there can possibly be any more new Halloween children's books good enough to add to the collection (you can see our favorites here). But, every year I'm surprised and there's always at least a few new good ones that I fall in love with.
This year we found 15 excellent new Halloween books for kids, mostly picture books but there are also two wonderful new board books for the season. Get your library cards ready!

New Halloween Children's Books
A Spoonful of Frogs
By Casey Lyall | Illustrated by Vera Brosgol
This is our favorite new Halloween picture book of 2022! A witch is filming a cooking show and she wants to add frogs to the recipe, a witch's favorite treat. The frogs, however, have something else in mind. Delightfully funny and the illustrations are perfection.
There's a Ghost In This House
Written and Illustrated by Oliver Jeffers
Technically this book came out last year, but it came out after Halloween so we couldn't add it to our Halloween book collection until this year.
We own every book Oliver Jeffers has ever created and they are all wonderful. But, if I had to pick a favorite, this would be it.
Kit and Caboodle
Written and Illustrated by Anna Pignataro
Kit is a witch, but not a very good one. Her magic never works quite right. But when a sweet little bat with a broken wing tumbles through Kit's window, she uses her mixed-up magic to make a friend.
This one has the sweetest illustrations!
Construction Site Gets a Fright!
By Sherri Duskey Rinker | Illustrated by AG Ford
This is a new interactive Halloween board book with flaps to lift. Every time the trucks are frightened, little readers can lift the flaps to show that it's really not scary at all. Very cute rhyming text!
Beatrice Likes the Dark
By April Genevieve Tucholke | Illustrated by Khoa Le
This gorgeously illustrated book isn't Halloween specific, but it has a spooky feel to it. The story follows two sisters, one who loves the dark and the other who loves the light. It's a tale of learning to respect each other's differences.
Leila, the Perfect Witch
Written and Illustrated by Flavia Z. Drago
Leila the witch is good at everything . . . well, until she enters a baking contest and realizes she's a disaster in the kitchen. Luckily, she has three magical sisters that come to her rescue.
I love the bright colorful illustrations in this one!
Hocus Pocus
By A.W. Jantha | Illustrated by Gris Grimly
I almost NEVER like picture book adaptations of movies
If Animals Trick-or-Treated
By Ann Whitford Paul | Illustrated by David Walker
This is a sweet and simple rhyming book about what the animals would do on Halloween. Adorable!
If Your Babysitter Is a Bruja
By Ana Siqueira | Illustrated by Irena Freitas
This is a fun bilingual picture book for Halloween! When a new babysitter arrives the night before Halloween, one little girl is convinced that she's a bruja. Luckily the little girl has a lot of tricks up her sleeve to avoid any bruja mischief. Very funny!
The Most Haunted House in America
By Jarrett Dapier | Illustrated by Lee Gatlin
The author was invited to play the drums at the White House in 2009, which then inspired him to write this fun rhyming story about a band of Skeleton Drummers in the white house.
Creepy Crayon! (Creepy Tales!)
By Aaron Reynolds | Illustrated by Peter Brown
Jasper is back! And this time it's a crayon that wants to help him get good grades. Sounds fantastic, but it gets creepy.
If you loved the first two, you'll love this one as well. Another phenomenal book from the Reynolds and Brown duo!
The Witchling's Wish
By Lu Fraser | Illustrated by Sarah Massini
This sweet rhyming witch story stole our hearts! Little Witching lives alone on a mountain top and wants a friend more than anything. She's excited when she finds a spell to conjure a friend, but it requires a secret ingredient that isn't going to be easy to obtain.
How to Catch a Witch
By Alice Walstead | Illustrated by Megan Joyce
A new one in the popular How to Catch series. In this one, it's Halloween night. But, when the Catch Club Kids head out to trick-or-treat they discover that a witch has opened a portal in the neighborhood and there are ghosts and goblins everywhere. They have to catch her and close the portal to save Halloween!
Spellbound
By Jess Townes | Illustrated by Jennifer Harney
Willow's world feels perfect until her baby brother is born and seems able to enchant everyone that sees him. Willow is convinced that he must be a wizard! Can she stop him or will she too be enchanted by his powerful magic.
This is a good one to read any time of year!
Happy Owl-oween!
By Laura Gehl | Illustrated by Lydia Nichols
This is the cutest! I love the retro style illustrations.
A fun rhyming picture book about the Owl family as they plan their costumes and celebrate Halloween.
The Monsters on the Broom
By Annemarie Guertin | Illustrated by Shauna Lyn Panczysyn
You sing/read this cute Halloween Board Book to the tune of "Wheels on the Bus" and it's adorable!
